It helps to keep the cardiovascular system, muscles, and immune system healthy. People have different ways of being physically active. Some folks jog, walk or run in the morning. Other people will go to the gym to do their fitness regimens. Amidst the thirty minute power walks and kickboxing classes, there are common questions that all fitness enthusiasts and athletes commonly ask; what and when do I eat before a workout.</p>
<p>The answer can be complicated as food is the fuel for our bodies. We want the food we eat to support our goals, not work against them. The trick is to make sure we are not putting too much fuel or not enough fuel in the tank. Finding a happy medium is crucial, because no one wants to feel sick while they are working out. What you eat usually depends upon the type of fitness activity you are performing. For the sake of argument and to save you from reading a nutritional and biochemical text book, let’s keep it simple. The most common form of fitness activity is a cardio session. Usually, it is an aerobics class, nature run, bicycling, or a jog on the treadmill. Now, the most common reasons for these cardiovascular activities are to lose fat, maintain a toned physique, or simply to stay in shape.</p>
<p>Ideally, you want to have some nutrients in the blood when you are physically active. This means, you should either eat or drink something relatively light thirty minutes to an hour before your activity. The time between the meal and your workout allows for digestion, so you are not running around with food in your stomach.</p>
<p>You want the light meal or drink to be <a href="http://www.truehealthyproducts.com/products/sports-nutrition/nitraplex/nitraplex-lean-protein/">high in protein</a>, low in carbohydrates, and very low in fat. A male should consume anywhere between 20g and 40g of protein, 1g to 20g of carbohydrates, and 0g to 1g of fat before an aerobic activity. A female should consume 15g to 30g of protein, 1g to 15g of carbohydrates, and 0g to 1g of fat. These macronutrient ratios will trigger the body to use stored body fat for energy and spare muscle tissue breakdown. Which means you will lose body fat and maintain muscle definition. <p><strong>Answer:</strong> Approximately 12 million Americans have hypothyroidism.  You are lucky if your major symptoms are fatigue, hair loss and weight gain, because there are about 40 possible other symptoms related to low thyroid, including allergies, goiter, depression, swollen eyelids, brittle nails, infertility, irritability, constipation, menstrual irregularities, psoriasis, eczema, constant infections, yeast overgrowth, fibromyalgia, heart palpitations, high cholesterol, memory impairment, cold intolerance, and diabetes. That last one is a shocker to most people but it’s true &#8211;low thyroid often precipitates diabetes and all of it’s potentially devastating complications.</p>
<p>Doctors often prescribe Synthroid  (sold generically as levothyroxine). It provides your body with a precursor to thyroid hormone called T4.  Your body converts T4 into T3 which is really what you want because  T3 does all the work for you.   T3 is active thyroid hormone.  All thyroid medications should be taken on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning unless otherwise directed.  It is usually taken orally or sometimes sublingually.</p>
<p>Your doctor could also prescribe “Armour Thyroid” for you, which may work better because it provides both T4 and T3 in one pill. Even better, progressive doctors can call the local compounding pharmacy to have them prepare a special formula of natural thyroid hormone for you.  Dosage is individual, and based on your blood work, symptoms, and basal body temperature (your body’s lowest temperature during sleep).  Next, try these few suggestions:</p>
<p><strong>Switch your regular table salt </strong>which only contains “sodium chloride” to sea salt which contains a full range of minerals.  Your thyroid gland loves minerals and makes thyroid hormone more efficiently in the presence of natural minerals.</p>
<p><strong>Go gluten-free.</strong> Researchers have found a significant link between wheat allergies (Celiac disease) and people with thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease).   Antibodies may come down within months of going gluten-free.</p>
<p><strong>Limit intake of certain supplements</strong>.  For example, alpha lipoic acid could interfere with the amount of active T3 your body makes.  Keep dosages low (or avoid) in thyroid disease.</p>
<p><strong>Limit intake of certain foods. </strong>For instance, processed soy foods (tofu, tempeh, soy milk) and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, cauliflower) work against your thyroid.</p>
<p>In addition, depending on what your doctor says, supplement with the following:</p>
<p><strong>Multi-minerals</strong>- People with reduced levels of zinc, iodine, selenium, copper and magnesium have difficulty making active T3 thyroid hormone.</p>
<p><strong>Spirulina supplements</strong>- a natural dietary supplement that is rich in trace minerals (and precious iodine) helps drive the production of thyroid hormone.</p>
<p><strong>Ashwagandha</strong>- an Ayurvedic herb that appears to nourish the thyroid gland, make thyroid hormone and provide antioxidant protection.</p>

Protein shakes come in a variety of flavours in powder form or in ready-to-drink packages, such as cans or foil packs.</p>
<h3>What are the benefits of protein shakes?</h3>
<p>Safe for people who are healthy and fit, protein shakes are used mainly by athletes who need nourishment right after their workouts, says Jose Antonio, chief executive officer and co-founder of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN). &#8216;Most people can&#8217;t make a meal immediately post-workout&#8217;, he says. &#8216;So these ready-to-drink shakes are really your best alternative&#8217;.</p>
<p>According to the ISSN, protein shakes are a safe way to ensure enough protein, when used as part of a balanced, nutrient-rich diet. This counters the view that protein shakes can be harmful to kidneys or bones.</p>
<ul>
<li>Although research hasn&#8217;t proven their role in sports performance and muscle strength, protein shakes may offer certain benefits.</li>
<li>An endurance athlete may find it easier to train with the help of protein shakes, says Antonio. That&#8217;s because they help the body recover from intense exercise. Protein shakes do this mainly by restoring muscle glycogen, a fuel source for exercise, which gets used up during workouts.</li>
<li>For the strength athlete, protein shakes can also help repair damage to muscles that can occur with serious bodybuilding.</li>
<li>The general fitness enthusiast who works out hard but doesn&#8217;t want to be a marathon runner or bodybuilder may also benefit, says Antonio. This is the kind of person who might run twice a week and lift weights twice a week.</li>
</ul>
<p>Some research shows other benefits as well. For example, a study of 130 U.S. Marines looked at intense exercisers who supplemented their diet with 10 g of protein, 8 g of carbohydrates, and 3 g of fat. They had fewer infections, less heat exhaustion, and less muscle soreness. Some protein shakes may help with weight management, as well. But more research is needed to confirm this.</p>
<h3>How much protein do you need?</h3>
<p>Almost all people can get the protein they need from whole foods and drinks in their diet. The recommended daily intake of protein for healthy adults is 0.75 g of protein per kilogram of body weight, or about 45 to 56 g of protein a day.</p>

<p>In most cases, only those who are active and restrict calories or are strict vegetarians are at risk for low protein.</p>
<p>People who exercise regularly do need more energy. They may also need a little more protein than people who are less active. Adding protein doesn&#8217;t add muscle mass, though, as many people believe.</p>
<p>The ISSN recommends that exercisers get 1.4 to 2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. Endurance athletes should be at the lower end of this range and strength athletes at the higher end. How much you need depends on the type and intensity of your exercise, the quality of the protein you eat, and your energy level and carbohydrate intake.</p>

<li>For endurance athletes: 1 to 1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, depending on intensity and duration of exercise and the training status of the athlete</li>

<p>Everyone, including athletes, can meet their protein needs without supplements or shakes. When choosing protein shakes, read the label to select the one with the composition that meets your needs.</p>
<p>Protein shakes vary in protein content. &#8216;If you&#8217;re a body builder, you&#8217;re going to shift to the drinks that have a bit more protein&#8217;. like Worldwide Sport Nutrition says Antonio. Endurance athletes are likely to favour drinks with more carbohydrates, he says, but the most important thing is simply to drink something after your workout.</p>

In this article I&#8217;ll explain anti-oxidants and why you should get plenty of them.</p>
<p>Cellular respiration is the process in which we break down glucose into water and carbon dioxide, releasing energy. This occurs deep in our cells in the mitochondria, the “generator” for cellular energy. Along the way, packets of energy called “electrons” are passed along a complex chain of chemical steps, eventually producing an energy storehouse known at adenosine-triphosphate (ATP).</p>
<p>As these electrons are passed along, some chemicals give up electrons, which is oxidation, and some accept electrons, which is reduction. This constant reduction-oxidation (redox) process is “cellular respiration.” The energy stored as ATP is later used to power the bodily functions.</p>
<p>The problem begins when some of these electrons escape the normal chain of events and react with ambient oxygen, creating toxic oxygen free radicals. These are very unstable and aggressively react with other molecules in the cell. Like sparks flying out of a fire, the free radicals damage whatever is in the immediate area. Sometimes this is the cell wall, or critical enzymes and proteins in the cell, or even the cellular DNA.</p>
<p>There are also free radicals that come from outside our body, such as hydrocarbons, pesticides, smog, cigarette smoke and metals like lead and mercury.</p>
<p>Anti-oxidants donate an electron to neutralize and “snuff out” free radicals. The anti-oxidant sacrifices itself as it then becomes oxidized and must be replenished. We have a tremendous built in system of anti-oxidants and get many more through or diet. Our “built-in” anti-oxidant systems fade with normal aging and our diets do not provide the amounts of anti-oxidants necessary to prevent oxidative damage.</p>
<p>Once the process of oxidation begins to overwhelm our ability to stop it, the damage begins, and along with it the process of degenerative diseases and aging.</p>
<p>Anti-oxidants like super-oxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione and n-acetyl cysteine (NAC) are made within our bodies, while others must be obtained through diet, such as Vitamins A, C, E and the many bioflavonoids from fruit and vegetable sources. Minerals like selenium, manganese, copper and zinc are not anti-oxidants but are a vital part of the systems.</p>
<p>It is critical to appreciate that anti-oxidants work in different parts of the body. For example, CoEnzyme Q works deep in the mitochondria helping with the electron transfers. Vitamin E and pomegranate are two that love fats and work well in fat areas like cell membranes and cholesterol plaque. Vitamin C and glutathione love water and work in the fluid portions of the cell.</p>
<p>Anti-oxidants also work in different ways. CoQ is an anti-oxidant, but it also regenerates Vitamin E. Alpha-lipoic acid regenerates Vitamin C which then regenerates Vitamin E. Vitamin C and E along with selenium help Vitamin A to function properly.</p>
<p>All this interaction between anti-oxidants underscores a very important concept in supplementation &#8211; they work together. Getting a broad spectrum of nutrients, like that found in nature, is an essential part of supplementation.</p>
<p>Many studies on anti-oxidants are short-sighted and limited to studying only one anti-oxidant without even considering its overall role in nature. For example, giving only one of the eight forms of Vitamin E, which we know will deplete one of the other forms, leads to negative effects that may well outweigh any positive benefit from supplementing the singular form.</p>
<p>Another example is a recent study showing Vitamin A supplementation increases lung cancer risk in smokers &#8211; without considering the possible effects of exhausting the supply of other co-factors with Vitamin A like Vitamins C, E and selenium. If the same study had supplemented these known co-factors the outcome may have proven much different.</p>
<p>Nutrition is our first medicine but nutrition alone is not adequate for most of us, requiring the logical use of supplements. We now have reviewed the normal process of oxidation in the body, which clearly plays a primary role in the process of aging and development of degenerative diseases. Understanding that oxidation is a far more complex process than any one anti-oxidant can handle leads us to appreciate why taking a broad-spectrum of anti-oxidants is absolutely critical.</p>
<p>The “evil-twin” of oxidation is inflammation and in my next column I&#8217;ll explore its damaging effects and how we can successfully combat inflammation.</p>

<p>These findings fall into the category of common sense, along the lines of “use it or lose it.” As you age, physical exercise becomes an ever more important aspect of optimal health and longevity.</p>
<h4>How to Prevent and Reverse Muscle Wasting</h4>
<p>This study explains the biological processes that cause muscle wasting as you move into your senior years.</p>
<p>As you likely know, protein is essential for proper muscle growth and maintenance, but this study found that as you age, your body becomes increasingly less able to use the protein in your food for building muscle.</p>
<p>In addition, they found that, in seniors, insulin no longer prevented the muscle breakdown between meals and overnight as it normally does in younger subjects.</p>
<p>This double-whammy adds up to significant muscle wasting in sedentary seniors. And poor blood supply, which prevents proper delivery of nutrients and hormones to your muscles, may be an important factor.</p>
<p>Exercise is the natural remedy for poor blood circulation, and the team confirmed that three weight training sessions per week over 20 weeks rejuvenated blood flow in the extremities to the point that they were identical to those in the younger group!</p>

<h4>Beware of Drugs That Can Cause Irreversible Damage to Your Muscles</h4>
<p>Before going any further, I also want to remind you of one very common cause of excessive muscle wasting, aside from a sedentary lifestyle, namely: statin drugs.</p>
<p>Statins are a class of drugs used to lower your cholesterol, and are among the most commonly prescribed medications in the world.</p>
<p>They have many dangerous side effects, one of which is a serious degenerative muscle tissue condition called rhabdomyolysis, which can be fatal (as your heart is a muscle, and can be affected by these drugs).</p>
<p>Statins such as Lipitor, Zocor, Pavacol and Mevacor lower your cholesterol by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, a key enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. But they can also activate the atrogin-1 gene, which plays a key role in muscle atrophy.</p>
<p>One recent study showed that even low concentrations of these drugs led to atrogin-1 induced muscle damage. And the higher the dosage, the greater the damage.</p>
<h4>The Importance of Weight Training for Optimal Health</h4>
<p>Unfortunately, many ignore weight training when devising their exercise plan, thinking they don’t want to “bulk up.”</p>
<p>But gaining more muscle through resistance exercises is an integral part of any well-rounded fitness program, especially if you want to lose weight.</p>
<p>However, weight training is not about vanity.</p>
<p>The intensity of your resistance training can achieve a number of beneficial changes on the molecular, enzymatic, hormonal, and chemical level in your body, which will help slow down (and many cases stop) many of the diseases caused by a sedentary lifestyle.</p>
<p>Therefore it’s also an essential element if you want to prevent common diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, or weakening of your bones (osteoporosis), limited range of motion, aches and pains, and yes, prevent excessive muscle wasting as you age.</p>
<p>I recently published an article on exercise for weight loss, so let’s take a look at some of the other benefits of exercise as it relates to maintaining optimal health well into your senior years.</p>
<h4>How Weight Lifting Can Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes and Heart Disease</h4>
<p>Your body has two types of fat: visceral and subcutaneous.</p>
<ul>
<li>Subcutaneous fat is the fat located just below your skin, and is the type that causes dimpling and cellulite.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Visceral fat, on the other hand, shows up in your abdomen and surrounds your vital organs including your liver, heart and muscles. It is this visceral fat that has been linked to serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke, among many other chronic diseases.</li>
</ul>
<p>A key strategy to reduce your risk of heart disease (and a host of other chronic diseases) is to keep your inflammation levels low, and avoiding gaining visceral fat is part of this equation.</p>
<p>Exercise is a critical component for reducing heart disease risk because it both lowers inflammation in your body, and is one of the best weapons against visceral fat. For example, in one study volunteers who did not exercise had an 8.6 percent increase in visceral fat after eight months, while those who exercised the most LOST over 8 percent of their visceral fat during the same amount of time.</p>
<p>This occurs because muscle burns more calories, and it consumes calories around the clock, even when you’re resting and sleeping. So, as you gain more muscle, your body naturally increases the amount of calories burned each day, which reduces fat stores.</p>
<p>As for lowering inflammation, physical exercise accomplishes this naturally by lowering levels of a C-reactive protein (CRP) that is linked to inflammation.</p>
<p>High levels of CRP in your body is associated with a higher than average risk of cardiovascular disease, and has even been suggested as a better indicator of possible heart attack than high cholesterol.</p>
<h4>How Strength Training Reduces Osteoporosis</h4>
<p>Weight-bearing exercise is one of the most effective remedies against osteoporosis.</p>
<p>The last thing you want to consider is to take a drug to improve your bone density, as without question, that is more likely to cause long-term harm than benefit.</p>
<p>Your bones are actually very porous and soft, and as you get older, your bones can easily become less dense and hence, more brittle. Especially if you are inactive.</p>
<p>Resistance training can combat this effect because as you put more tension on your muscles it puts more pressure on your bones, which then respond by continuously creating fresh, new bone.</p>
<p>In addition, as you build more muscle, and make the muscle that you already have stronger, you also put more constant pressure on your bones.</p>
<p>A good weight-bearing exercise to incorporate into your routine (depending on your current level of fitness, of course) is a walking lunge, as it helps build bone density in your hips, even without any additional weights. You can see the video at the top of the page on how to do that.</p>

<p>Optimal health is dependent on an active lifestyle; eating fresh, whole foods, avoiding as many processed foods as possible, and addressing the stress in your life.</p>

<p>When a person has flabby arms their triceps are usually lacking in muscle tone. Therefore all exercises for flabby arms involve toning the triceps. The only equipment you will need to tone your triceps is a set of five pound dumbbells. You can use the dumbbells to do exercises for flabby arms at home. Kickbacks and extensions most often work best. You should do sets of ten at least thee times a week. Another option is to do exercises for flabby arms at your local gym using various machines that are meant to tone the upper body. Also, you can perform pull ups. Swimming or using a rowing machine can also do a lot to tone up flabby arms.</p>
<p><strong>Don’t Expect Overnight Results</strong></p>
<p>If you take the appropriate measures to reduce body fat and do various exercises for flabby arms you will eventually notice results. However, do not expect to have toned looking arms immediately. It may take months of sensible eating, cardiovascular exercises and resistance work on your triceps before you start to notice the results. The flabbier your arms are the longer it is going to take to tone them up. The trick is to never give up or let yourself get discouraged just because you don’t get immediate results. If you keep trying then at some point you will reach your objective.</p>

<p>In one of these studies, researchers examined the effects of acetyl L-carnitine (ALC)/alpha lipoic acid (ALA) therapy on aging and hearing in rats, and found that it reduced the normal age-associated deterioration in auditory sensitivity and improved inner ear function. They concluded that these improvements were related to the acetyl L-carnitine (ALC)/ALA combination’s ability to protect and repair age-induced mitochondrial DNA damage, thereby boosting mitochondrial function and improving energy turnover. However, while the initial evidence from animal studies looks extremely promising, the jury is still out as far as humans are concerned.</p>

<p>The skin is the largest organ of the body. It protects us from invading bacteria, helps regulate body temperature and keeps our insides from falling out. <p>Some parts of your body should be acidic, such as your stomach when it produces digestive acids. However, in general, your body&#8217;s tissues and blood should be slightly alkaline.</p>
<p>There are two ways you can find out how acidic you are. Your GP can test your blood pH, or you can test your saliva or urine with pH strips from your local pharmacy.</p>
<p>These are made of litmus paper which changes color when acidic or alkaline substances come into contact with it. When your body&#8217;s pH is in balance, this reading should be between 7.0 and 7.5.</p>
<p>&#8216;Green&#8217; foods such as asparagus have an alkalizing effect on the body.</p>
<p>There are many types of acid-producing foods and when your body is continually trying to counteract an acidic state, acid can become a poison. The worst offenders are vinegar (except for apple cider vinegar), alcoholic drinks, margarine, pork and beef, salmon and mackerel.</p>
<p>Also acid-forming are coffee and black tea, yellow cheeses, pickles and mustard, chickpeas, most nuts, white rice and high-sugar and white-flour products.</p>
<p>However, you do not have to avoid these foods completely to be healthy. They can be enjoyed in moderation, but limit them to no more than three servings a day. The equivalent of two servings is two glasses of alcohol, or one coffee, and salmon and chickpeas for dinner.</p>
<p>Green drinks &#8211; those containing chlorophyll and wheat-grass &#8211; are the best way to create good acidalkaline balance. A liquid chlorophyll supplement, available from chemists, can give you an extra dose of vegetables daily. It can help to neutralize acids in the body so your blood is less likely to become sluggish and inefficient.</p>
<p>Alkalizing foods include spinach, peppers, courgette, broccoli, carrots, cucumber, cabbage and sweet potatoes &#8211; and surprisingly lemons and limes (although the fruit is acidic, it is actually alkalizing in the blood). Avocado, asparagus (below), garlic, onions, radishes and uncooked tomatoes are also mildly alkalizing.</p>
<p>Other points to good acid-alkaline balance include limiting your caffeine intake, having four alcohol-free days a week, avoiding smoking, and drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day. Encourage friendly gut flora by taking a pro-biotic supplement.</p>

<p><strong>EAT MOISTURIZING FOODS</strong></p>
<p>Certain fats are moisturizing to your skin &#8211; they moisturize you from the inside out. The good fats include GLA (found in Evening Primrose Oil), EPA, DHA and omega-3 (all found in oily fish and flax seed).</p>
<p>Omega-3 is particularly good for your skin. It is abundant in cold-water fish such as sardines, trout and herring and although they are acid-forming, salmon and mackerel are good sources, too. Omega-3 is also found in flax seeds, walnuts and green vegetables.</p>
<p>Omega-6, also found in flax seeds, walnuts and leafy greens as well as eggs and fish, converts eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which decreases inflammation and improves skin moisture. It also helps normalize blood pressure, helps with cardiovascular health and can reduce your risk of certain cancers.</p>
<p>If you have dry skin, psoriasis, rosacea, dandruff or premature aging take an omega-3 fish oil supplement (or flax seed oil if you are vegetarian) in addition to eating oily fish two or three times a week.</p>
<p>Saturated fats in dairy, meat and fried foods can cause inflammation, dry skin and premature ageing. They can also increase your risk of heart disease, asthma, eczema and acne.</p>
<p>Limit your intake, and increase the amount of foods that help protect from the damaging effects of these fats, including onions, ginger, turmeric, red wine (which contains flavonoids), Vitamin E and selenium.</p>

<p><strong>EAT LESS</strong></p>
<p>Melatonin is a hormone released during sleep. It has an antioxidant effect that helps to protect against DNA damage. As you age, the body&#8217;s ability to produce melatonin plummets.</p>
<p>When your body doesn&#8217;t produce enough, you will experience difficulty falling asleep and wake up after eight hours still feeling drowsy. However, a study published in the Journal Of Clinical Endocrinology And Metabolism showed how melatonin levels can be manipulated by diet.</p>

<p>You don&#8217;t need to calorie-count. For meals, fill half your plate with salad or vegetables, the other half with carbohydrates and protein. Eat carbs that release energy slowly, such as grainy breads, brown rice and wholemeal pasta. Avoid &#8216;hit and run carbs&#8217; that have a high glycemic index, such as white bread, chips, mashed potato and white rice.</p>
<p>Snack less and stick to healthy snacks such as almonds or an apple.</p>
<p>Make sure you include protein in two of your main daily meals. When eating animal protein, have a portion the size and thickness of the palm of your hand. Have a maximum of two servings of red meat a week, including lean lamb, beef and organic liver, and a maximum of two servings of white meat per week, such as skinless chicken. And eat up to three servings of seafood a week.</p>
<p>And don&#8217;t starve yourself. Excessive dieting is bad for the skin so be sensible and never skip a meal.</p>
<p><strong>HAVE A GOOD SKIN CARE ROUTINE</strong></p>

People go to the gym, workout, do some cardio 5 days a week, and still don’t see the result in their physique. One of the most challenging obstacles to overcome is how we view food. Unless you compete in figure, fitness or bodybuilding </span></span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><span style="font-size: medium;">competitions</span></span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><span style="font-size: medium;">, your diet does not have to be strict all the time. One of the biggest mistakes is trying to follow a diet that is so strict that they lose the vision of having fun. The end result is misery. The rate at which you desire change &#8211; should be the guideline of how strict your diet is. </span></span></p>

My wife is a national level figure competitor, before she started competing, if she wanted to lose weight she would skip breakfast, eat a salad for lunch, and have a small plate of food for dinner, and her body  sent out the signal that it was starving. Most all the food she was eating was being stored as fat. Once she decided to start competing and started eating every 2-3 hours, her physique changed all for the better. </span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify; margin-left: 0pt; margin-right: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><span style="font-size: medium;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify; margin-left: 0pt; margin-right: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><span style="font-size: medium;">Now the big question “<strong>What, when and how often do you need to eat.</strong>”</span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify; margin-left: 0pt; margin-right: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><span style="font-size: medium;">As a rule you need to eat every 3 hours. Your main staples need to come from egg whites, oatmeal, fruits, green vegetables, chicken, lean red meat, nuts and at least 64 oz. of water per day. As I mentioned before, my wife is a national level figure competitor, and I compete in bodybuilding. All of our food is measured and/or weighed year round. Off season, we have 1 cheat meal per week, this keeps our food desires in check. When we start our contest diet, cheat meals end. I may get a re-feed (increase in carbs, up to 100 grams per meal for 1 day) but we don’t consider that a cheat meal.</span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify; margin-left: 0pt; margin-right: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><span style="font-size: medium;"> </span></span></p>

<p>Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — Many people think getting a washboard stomach, chiseled down to the rock hard core, is unattainable and virtually impossible.</p>
<p>Granted, it’s no easy task but in reality, getting six pack abs is simple math.</p>
<p>Nutrition + Exercise + Persistence = Success</p>
<p>Let’s be honest here…the majority of people will never get those washboard abs because they simply don’t have the dedication and motivation to keep at it, day after day. But it is doable! These two tips, if followed continually and with passion, will not only help to improve your abs but will also help to strengthen your core and your attitude!</p>
<p><strong>Nutrition</strong></p>
<p>Bar none, nutrition can make or break any attempt at washboard abs. In fact, nutrition is the single most important part of the entire equation. You can do one million crunches per day and have the most remarkable set of abs anywhere, but if they are covered by a layer of fat, no one will see them…not even you! Aim for 5 or 6 mini-meals each day as this is the best bet in jump starting your metabolism.</p>
<p>Limit or completely refrain from eating these ab-flab foods:</p>
<ul>
<li>refined, bleached carbs such as white bread and pasta</li>
<li>cola</li>
<li>candy</li>
<li>friend food and fast food</li>
<li>hydrogenated oils</li>
<li>sugars including any kind of high fructose corn syrup</li>
<li>Opt for these colorful, tasty foods that are good for the body and the mind–and are six pack-friendly as well!</li>
<li>oatmeal</li>
<li>extra virgin olive oil</li>
<li>whole grains</li>
<li>fruits &amp; vegetables</li>
<li>nuts</li>
<li>eggs</li>
<li>natural peanut butter</li>
<li>lean protein such as chicken, turkey and fish</li>
<li>green tea</li>
<li>water</li>
</ul>
<p>TIP: Keep your expectations in check by being realistic about your goals. You are human and will want to have a little cheat here and there. Do it! However, keep your overall focus on the prize and make a make a conscious effort to improve your nutrition.</p>
<p><strong>Exercise</strong></p>
<p>Although you will need to push yourself harder than the average exerciser, you will also need to focus on all kinds of exercise including cardio, weightlifting and ab exercises. Combine these three elements in your routine 5-6 times per week (but no less than 3 times per week). Cardio can consist of walking, running, cycling, martial arts, biking, swimming…anything you like and can stick to.</p>
<p>Implement interval training and high intensity training since doing so will burn fat fast.</p>
<p>Lifting weights is a critical part of six pack abs. Why? Simply put, three pounds of added muscle melts off as many calories as a one mile jog…all while sitting still! Shoot for 30-1 hour minutes, 3-4 times per week, alternating the muscle groups you work. Never work the same muscle group two days in a row.</p>

<p><strong>PRE-WORKOUT NUTRITION</strong></p>
<p><strong>Pre-workout nutrition</strong> should mainly include carbohydrates and proteins. During intense physical activity, your body depends on fuel from glycogen made from the carbohydrates that you eat. The body can&#8217;t use fat for fuel during high intensity exercise because there is not enough oxygen available. Consuming fruits, vegetables, smoothies and simple sugars 1-2 hours before a workout will build up your glycogen stores. Glycogen is stored in your liver and muscles and it is broken down into glucose. Glucose is then used by your body to make energy. As a result, when your glycogen stores are low, your performance will suffer.</p>
<p><strong>Research has shown the effectiveness of pre-workout protein drinks (such as whey and casein).</strong> These drinks will make enough amino acids available to take advantage of the increased blood flow to your working muscles. Also, your muscles get 2 times as much benefit from a pre-workout protein drink compared to having just a post-workout protein drink.</p>
<p>Endurance athletes can also benefit from consuming moderate amounts of fat (such as flax oil and omega 3s) because of the availability of oxygen during exercise or competition.</p>
<p><strong>POST-WORKOUT NUTRITION</strong></p>
<p><strong>Post-workout nutrition</strong> is important to help the body recover from intense exercise. <strong>It is not necessary to eat immediately after your workout. But there is a 45 minute to 1 hour window where replenishing your body&#8217;s fuel (carbs, protein, fats) will optimize your tissue&#8217;s repair and growth.</strong> Carbohydrates are important for glycogen stores recovery. The type of carbohydrates consumed are not as important as the amount consumed (replenishment is the key issue).</p>
<p><strong>So, how many daily carbs should you consume to replenish glycogen stores? It depends on your size and your sport.</strong></p>
<p>Your body needs a minimum of 200 grams of carbs per day if you are a light exerciser. You will feel tired and listless without this amount of carbs.</p>
<p><strong>Athletes in sports that require plyometrics, speed and weight training need about 2.5 grams of daily carbs per pound of body weight.</strong> A 180 pound athlete would need at least 450 grams of carbs each day to function properly.</p>
<p><strong>Endurance athletes such as marathoners, swimmers, triathletes need high amounts of daily carbs. About 3.5 to 4.5 grams per pound of body weight is needed.</strong> So, a 180 pound athlete would need 630 to 810 grams of carbs per day. These athletes sometimes use carbohydrate loading before events.</p>
<p><strong>Protein is another critical post-exercise nutrient.</strong> Protein provides amino acids which are used to repair and rebuild damaged tissues as a result of intense exercise. <p>Daily protein needs for athletes should be calculated according to body weight (not by percent of calories). Daily protein targets (grams per pound of body weight) are:</p>

<li>Recreational exerciser, adult 0.5-0.75</li>

<li>Growing teenage athlete 0.8-0.9</li>
<li>Adult building muscle mass 0.7-0.9</li>
<li>Maximum usable amount by adults 0.9 (your body will excrete excess protein)</li>

<p>For example, if you weigh 190 pounds and want a high protein intake (0.9 gms/lb), you&#8217;ll need 171 grams of protein. Protein should be eaten at least every 3-4 hours to insure adequate supply during the day. Your night meal should be comprised of slowly digesting protein (such as lean meats) that will give a constant release of amino acids into your system overnight.</p>
<p>Of course, hydration is also very important. Drink daily about a half an ounce of water for every pound of body weight (180 pound person would drink 90 ounces).</p>
<p>The post-exercise meal should consist of carbohydrates, protein and a small amount of essential fats. A drink, such as a protein power mix smoothie, is good because it is quickly digestible. A ratio of 2g carbs/1g protein is desirable. The carbs should be high glycemic , the proteins should be easily digestible (whey, egg or casein) and the fats should be from sources such as fish or flax oil.</p>
