Let me begin by giving you this rule of thumb for losing weight.

So, here we go; the first thing you should bear in mind when it comes to losing weight is that there is a difference between weight loss and fat loss.
When we talk about losing weight, that would consist of fat, muscle and water.
When we talk about fat loss, that’s some thing different all together.
In order to lose fat you have to learn how to manipulate the body to get rid of fat, while holding on to muscle. And that’s the trick most people don’t know.
When you hear someone say that they’ve lost weight, you may be able to notice such a loss in their clothes or in their features.
But what you do not see is the percentage of fat lost or the percentage of muscle that has been maintained.
Once you can lose fat without losing muscle tissue, you’re close to accomplishing your goal of proper weight and fat loss.
Now, there is a lot of talk these days about the use of fat burners.

How to Lose Weight without Cardio
I’ve done it in the past, so there’s no reason why you can’t do the same. Weight loss is based off of two things:
- Increased metabolic rate
- Decreased caloric intake
Most people focus on reducing their caloric intake and burning off more calories through cardio. The worst thing that’s happened in the fitness world is the publication of these calorie charts that tell people how much they’re burning for each minute of cardio they perform.
I remember back in college I overhead this conversation between two friends. Lets call them Tom and Joe. Tom is a chubby guy who’s just started losing a little weight through exercise and diet. Joe is a skinny guy. I don’t know much about Joe, but I’m assuming he has a faster metabolic rate than Tom.
Joe goes to eat a pastry and Tom says, “You know it’s going to take you a long time to burn that off.” Joe looks up at Tom, confused. “Yeah, that pastry is like 300 calories. I can burn that off by jogging 30 minutes on a treadmill, but you’ll probably have to jog like 3 hours because you’re skinnier than me.”
WRONG!
Joe will probably finish off the pastry, get up and walk to the door and feel hungry again. Why? Because he has a fast metabolic rate and can eat more calories overall than Tom because of his fast metabolic rate.
Fat loss with High Intensity Resistance Training
When you perform high intensity resistance training you cause damage to the connective tissue and muscle fibers. You also drain energy reserves. All this activity gives the body a reason to change. It starts the recovery process, which includes strengthening your muscles and replenishing energy stores.
In this process, your body improves. It gets stronger, leaner, faster, and more athletic.
I mentioned earlier that your body must burn more calories than it consumes in order to lose weight. But the biggest issue here is that your body does not discriminate between muscle and fat when performing long duration cardiovascular activities.
Short, high intensity resistance training prevents the loss of muscle mass. Instead of burning calories from both fat and muscle, why not burn calories from your fat stores, and use it to rebuild damaged muscle tissue?
The Role of Estrogen in Female Fat Loss
Estrogen plays a huge role in female body composition. The hormone is produced in large quantities by the ovaries of females and some by the adrenal glands. Estrogen causes increased deposits of fats in certain sibcutaneous (under the skin) tissue.
Estrogen also causes fat to be stored in the buttocks and thighs, which gives women their characteristic figure. This is hormone is the primary reason why women carry more fat than men. However, because women have more estrogen and less testosterone than men, it is next to impossible for them get as big and muscular as men without the use of specific supplements.

Specific Diet Recommendations for Females
The same rules of eating apply to females as men. It is often assumed that women need less calories then men. This is only partly true. Most women need less calories only because they weigh less. However, assuming a man and woman weighed the same and followed very similar training programs, their caloric needs would not be much different.
But most athletic women do not weigh the same as athletic men. Again, it has to do with hormones than anything else. Here is my simple approach to nutrition: eat more if you need to. Eat less if you need to. Eat the same if you need to.
Well, how do you figure out how much you need to eat? Simple answer:
- If your goal is fat loss, and you are not losing weight at your current caloric intake, then drop the calories per day just slightly and see what happens.
- If your caloric intake is less than 1000 per day, and you still are not losing weight, then you are not eating enough. Eat more for about a week and see what happens.
A lot of dieting is experimentation. I refuse to follow specific formulas. These formulas often don’t take into account individual metabolic rates and level of activity. They’re often based on assumptions, and you know what happens when you assume.
Here’s my primary message to women: don’t be afraid to eat more if you need to eat more.

It is a popular weight calculation used widely by the medical community. The formula is weight (in kg) divided by the height (in meters) squared: kg/m2. The ideal body weight range is a result of the BMI calculation between 19 and 24. In your case, you are right in the middle of the ideal range with a BMI of 21.79.
The healthy weight range and BMI give you a good indication of ideal weight, but they do not indicate anything further about our exact health. There is another parameter that we can all use to accurately indicate the state of our health: body composition. Body composition refers to a method of measuring two important aspects that contribute to our total weight. The first part is lean body mass and the second part is body fat.
With this parameter, the human body is divided into three categories of fat. The athletic or lean zone is when one has a body-fat level of less than 14 percent (men) or less than 20 percent (women). The normal zone is when one’s body-fat level falls between 15 percent and 25 percent (men) or between 20 percent and 30 percent (women). The fat or obese zone is when one has a body fat level of more than 25 percent (men) or more than 30 percent (women).
People who are in the fat or obese zone have a higher tendency to have a high blood sugar level and cholesterol level. They are also at higher risk of suffering degenerative diseases (coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer) some time in their future.
The healthy weight range and BMI do not indicate your body-fat level. Two people can have the same body height and weight, but one can be very athletic with less fat and more lean body mass and the other can be very unfit with more fat and less lean body mass.
My partner, Halim Tsiang, and I at RAI Institute have conducted a series of body-fat surveys since 2006 with a population sample of up to 300 people. We found that more than 50 percent of people whose weights puts them in the healthy range with a normal BMI are actually fat or obese according to the body composition parameters.
To properly determine whether you belong to this group or not, you can have your level of body fat checked at any good fitness center. Most will be more than happy to perform a body composition test for you for free. Another option is to buy a body-fat scale (available at fine sporting goods or home gym stores) for your own personal use and monitoring.
Embrace exercise weekly and keep to three square meals every day. The next step is to increase the consistency and quality of your healthy habits, and to drop some of the less-than-healthy habits. Here is a list of healthy habits you can start building right this very moment (although it would, of course, be wise to consult your physician before starting any physical or nutritional program).
- Eat more vegetables
Why? They are high in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. By eating more of this food group, you will eat less fatty or sugary foods.
- Get plenty of lean protein
Protein is the building block for our body. It is required for tissue (muscles, skin, hair, nails and joints) repair, cell regeneration, building the immune system and various hormone production. A general guide is to have a portion of lean protein about the size of your own palm or a deck of cards with every meal. Try to also snack with protein rather than sugary or floury foods.
- Cut down on fried foods
Fried foods tend to increase the caloric content of food up to 300 percent compared with steamed or roasted foods without increasing the size or portion. These additional calories are generally empty in nutrition and will be stored straight away as fat in our body.
- Increase your exercise to three times a week.

The trick to your abs is to realize that strength training is important to keep your belly strong, but ab exercises aren’t magic. Bicycle Exercise: Lie flat on your back on the ground. Lift one leg 10 inches above the ground. Place your hands at the back of your head. Then try to twist the elbow in the direction of the bent knee and hold the position till you finish counting 10. Then change the position and lift the other leg and move the other elbow in its direction. When you change the position of the leg and the arm continuously, it will look as if you are riding a bicycle. Throughout the exercise make sure your body remains straight and do not form an arch. Here are a few more exercises to lose belly fat.

When you are looking for belly fat reduction, you have to focus on fat burning exercises for the entire body, because you cannot reduce fat from one particular portion of the body only.
