Health And Fitness News: What To Eat Before You Exercise

November 24, 2009 by THP

Eating Before Exercise / Athletic Competition

pre workoutWhat an athlete consumes before, during and after exercise is important for comfort and performance during exercise. While eating soon before exercise doesn’t provide the bulk of the fuel needed for the activity, it can prevent the distracting symptoms of hunger during exercise. The major source of fuel for active muscles is carbohydrate which gets stored in the muscles as glycogen in the days before exercise. This is one reason that the post-exercise meal is critical to recovery and being ready for the next exercise session.

When To Eat

Exercising on a full stomach is not ideal. Food that remains in your stomach during an event may cause stomach upset, nausea, and cramping. To make sure you have enough energy, yet reduce stomach discomfort, you should allow a meal to fully digest before the start of the event. This generally takes 1 to 4 hours, depending upon what and how much you’ve eaten. Everyone is a bit different, and you should experiment prior to workouts to determine what works best for you.

If you have an early morning race or workout, it’s best to get up early enough to eat your pre-exercise meal. If not, you should try to eat or drink something easily digestible about 20 to 30 minutes before the event. The closer you are to the time of your event, the less you should eat. You can have a liquid meal closer to your event than a solid meal because your stomach digests liquids faster.

What To Eat
Because glucose is the preferred energy source for most exercise, a pre-exercise meal should include foods that are high in carbohydrates and easy to digest. This include foods such as pasta, fruits, breads, energy bars and water.

Lactic acid gets secreted during exercise. This inhibits performance at the gym and in athletic competition. Alkaline ionized water should be consumed by athletes during exercise because it rids the body of lactic acid which makes the muscles stiff. It is recommended for all gyms to have water ionizers installed for their members.

Minerals And Vitamins: How They Work To Prevent Hair Loss

November 24, 2009 by THP

hair(THP) Vitamins and minerals are some of the most essential nutrients in any person’s diet, and making sure that you get adequate amounts of the important ones helps ensure good health. Aside from merely being good for the rest of your body however, vitamins and minerals may also help you deal with hair loss.

However, it is important to keep in mind that vitamins and minerals can have adverse effects on your health as well–particularly when taken in large amounts–so you should consult with your doctor before going on an increased mineral or vitamin regimen.

Biotin

Biotin is thought to aid in the production of keratin, which is the primary component of hair and nails. This vitamin may even prevent premature graying of the hair, and is found in whole grains, liver, milk, and egg yolks. 150 to 300 mcg is the recommended daily allowance.

Calcium

This mineral is primarily known for being good for the bones, but it is also important for healthy hair. Calcium comes from dairy foods, fish, nuts, and certain legumes, and you should take 1,500 mg daily.

Copper

Aside from possibly preventing hair loss, copper may also improve the color of you hair and its structure. This mineral is abundant in liver, leafy green vegetables, shellfish, eggs, and beans. 3 mg daily should be enough to ensure good health.

Vitamin A

Useful in promoting healthy sebum formation, Vitamin A is found in milk, cheese, meat, eggs, carrots, broccoli, peaches, and fish liver oil. 5,000 IU a day is the most that you should be taking, as excessive amounts of Vitamin A can actually have a reverse effect and cause you to lose even more hair.

Vitamin C

This antioxidant vitamin is useful for hair as well as skin. Your options for getting Vitamin C are citrus fruits, tomatoes, green peppers, and dark green vegetables. 60mg is the recommended daily dose.

Vitamin E

This vitamin can increase the circulation of blood in your scalp, which can promote better and healthier hair growth. Vitamin E is available in abundant amounts in soybeans, nuts, dried beans, and green vegetables. You can safely take as much as 400 IU of Vitamin E daily.

Vitamin B6

Aside from possibly preventing hair loss, this vitamin can also increase melanin production, resulting in improved hair color. Vitamin B6 is available from liver and other organ meats, whole grain cereals, and egg yolks. You should consume 1.6 mg of Vitamin B6 daily.

Iodine

This essential mineral aids in the regulation of thyroid hormones, and is available in fish, seaweed, iodized salt and garlic. 150 mcg is the recommended daily dose.

Manganese

Manganese helps promote rapid hair growth. It can be found in eggs, avocados, beans, meat and chicken. 3 to 9 mg is the recommended daily dose.

Nine A Day Plus Vitamins contains all the nutrients you need for healthy hair, and all the ingredients are derived from organic veggies and fruits.

Cutting Edge Cancer Research: Top 10 Cancer Fighting Supplements

November 24, 2009 by THP

Fruit , vegetable, supplement and measure tapeThe latest on how supplements can ward off cancer.

Nutrition plays an important role in every stage of the fight against cancer: resisting it, suppressing its development and reducing its spread.  Many nutrients are involved, and most are available as supplements: vitamins and minerals, certainly, but also all sorts of plant compounds, friendly bacteria and specialized fats, like omega-3 fatty acids.

If you’re serious about preventing cancer, here are some of the supplements you should be taking.

1. CoQ10: This natural energy-producer and powerful antioxidant is proving to be an important cancer fighter. New research has found that CoQ10 is helpful for colon cancer, breast cancer and melanoma. Animals exposed to cancer-causing agents who are pre-treated with CoQ10 are less likely to develop cancer because CoQ10 help to neutralize toxins.

During cancer treatment, CoQ10 not only preserves immune function, it seems to help cancer drugs work better. And after treatment, CoQ10 helps the immune system attack any remaining cancer cells, reducing the risk for new growth and spread. CoQ10 is used extensively in Japan as an adjuvant for cancer treatment. Its safety record is unparalleled at virtually any dose.

What to Take: We recommend 200 – 600 mg of CoQ10 a day.

2. Probiotics. These friendly bacteria can decrease fecal enzymes associated with formation of cancer-causing compounds in the intestines. They can bind to substances that cause genetic mutations to intestinal cells. They stimulate enzymes that inactivate cancer-causing substances. Probiotics can also help support and stimulate the immune system indirectly and directly throughout the body, which is why they’ve been linked to a reduced risk for cancers other than colon cancer, such as bladder cancer.

Nine A Day Plus now how has an all natural new Citrus Berry Shake powder packed with nutrients to mix into smoothies that contains probiotics. To learn more click here>>

What to Take: We recommend a shelf stable probiotic with 10 billion CFU (colony-forming units) count per dose.

3. Prebiotics: Think of prebiotics as food and housing for probiotics. These are nutritional substances such as inulin, a soluble fiber, that help probiotics grow and colonize inside your intestines. In one study, volunteers were fed a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics, or placebo, for eight weeks. A wide range of  indicators of colon cancer risk were measured. Those taking the probiotics with prebiotics had less DNA damage and a lower rate of cell proliferation in biopsies taken from their colons. They also had lower levels of cancer-causing mutagens in their feces.

What to Take: Look for a probiotic supplement that includes prebiotics in addition to beneficial bacteria.

4. Beta Glucan:
These chains of sugar molecules have the ability to enhance your immune system and help it to attack cancer cells. Beta glucan is most often derived from the cell walls of baker’s yeast, or from mushrooms such a shiitake and maitake. In Japan, extracts containing various types of beta glucan have been used to successfully assist in treating cancer patients for the last 20 years.

Beta glucan seems to have the unique ability to stick to cancer cells and “tag” them to make it easier for the immune system to recognize the cancer cells as foreign invaders that need to be destroyed. Beta glucan does provide some immune system boost on its own, but it seems to work best when used along with other forms of cancer therapy, such as monoclonal  antibodies or interferon.

Beta Glucan is a key ingredient in Stemulite Fitness Formula.

What to Take: We recommend about 100 mg a day of Beta 1,3/1,6 D-glucan, a form proven effective at stimulating immunity.

5. Resveratrol: This powerful anti-aging nutrient helps to preserve normal cell cycle regulation, which is an important function in dealing with DNA damage. If cell cycle regulation is defective, mutations in the cells’ DNA may result in cancer. Resveratrol has been found to induce cell cycle arrest for a time following DNA damage, in order to allow for DNA repair or activation of processes leading to cell death, should the damage be irreparable.

Resveratrol also helps to regulate enzymes. It “upregulates” certain enzymes that break down toxic substances in the body, so it promotes the excretion of these harmful chemicals.

What to Take: We recommend about 400 mg a day of standardized trans-resveratrol.

6. Vitamin D.
New research suggests that having an optimal blood level of vitamin D could cut your cancer risk by as much as 60%! Vitamin D can help activate certain proteins that suppress tumor growth and development, and help prevent as many as 16 different types of cancer, including lung, pancreas, breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Vitamin D increases the self-destruction of mutated cells, reduces the spread and reproduction of cancer cells, and reduces the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, an important step in the growth and spread of cancerous tumors.

Research shows 40-70% of Americans have sub-optimal blood levels of vitamin D. The best way to figure out how much you need is to get a blood test, before and after you have started taking supplements.

What to Take: Some people need 2,000 – 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day, or even more, to stay at a good blood level of to 40 to 60 ng/mL (100 – 150 nmol/L).

Nine A Day Plus vitamins are derived from organic sources and contain Vitamin D that is easily assimilated.

7. Green Tea: An extract of the main active ingredient in green tea, EGCG, slows blood vessel formation in tumors, reducing the rate at which they can grow and spread. Like resveratrol, green tea extract can also regulate cell division and growth, and cause programmed cell death in DNA-damaged cells. Some of the cancers that green tea can face down include prostate, esophageal, bladder, cervical, pancreatic, ovarian, lymphoma and leukemia. Green tea is also active against human papilloma virus (HPV) a sexually transmitted virus associated with cervical and anal cancer and warts.

What to Take: We recommend about 450 mg a day of a standardized green tea extract.

8. Fish Oil. Greater intake of omega-3s has been associated with a reduced risk for cancer. By helping to stabilize the immune system, fish oil may have multiple anti-cancer effects, including regulating cell proliferation, inducing damaged cells to die, preventing blood vessel growth in tumors and helping to prevent the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body.

What to Take: Dosages of 1,200 – 5,000 mg a day are recommended.

9. Curcumin: This component of turmeric has emerged as a leading cancer fighter. Curcumin can disrupt cancer cells in several stages of development. It, too, causes programmed cell death and inhibits new blood vessel growth into tumors. It seems to work best against colon cancer, and in some animal studies, was as good as certain chemotherapy drugs at inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.

What to Take: Dosages up to 8,000 mg a day for three months have been used with no toxicity.

10. Garlic Extract.
Garlic can increase activity of toxin-neutralizing enzymes and decrease activity of toxin-activating enzymes in the intestines. Garlic also helps prevent cancer-causing DNA changes and promotes the death of damaged intestinal cells.

What to Take: As much as 7,200 mg a day of garlic extract has been taken for up to six months without side effects.

The Anti-Aging Bottom Line:
Our risk for almost every kind of cancer goes up as we age. Nutritional supplements that fight cancer at every stage can give you the edge you need to beat it.

Health And Fitness News: Vitamins Treat Macular Degeneration

November 18, 2009 by THP

eyesightDEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am turning to you for help. My mother tells me that her eye doctor says she has macular degeneration. Already she’s preparing to live in a nursing home, since she says she faces blindness. Yesterday she was driving a car, keeping house for herself and had an active social life. I can’t believe this change could happen in one day. Does it? – L.M.

ANSWER: The more-common kind of macular degeneration, the dry kind, doesn’t usually lead to such profound loss of vision in one day. I believe your mother is drawing some premature conclusions about what she faces. The macula is a small area on the retina, the back part of the eye that turns incoming light signals into electrical signals that are sent to the brain to allow us to see. The macula is about the size of a newsprint capital O. Small as that retinal area is, it carries on one of the biggest vision jobs. It’s responsible for clear central vision, the kind needed to read, to watch TV, to recognize faces and to drive. Age is one important factor in developing macular degeneration. The condition is formally called age-related macular degeneration. Genes have a role. So does cigarette smoking.

Wet macular degeneration comes about from the sudden sprouting of fragile blood vessels in the macular area. Those vessels leak fluid, which interferes with macular function. This kind of macular degeneration can progress rapidly. There are more ways of handling it than there are of handling the dry variety.

Slow your mother down. She is acting far too prematurely. Her vision might never progress to the point where she has to give up driving and is dependent on others. A combination of high doses of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene (a vitamin A relative), zinc and copper can slow the progress of dry macular degeneration. People shouldn’t treat themselves with this vitamin mixture. Their doctors will tell them when it is appropriate. Currently, more studies are ongoing to determine the place of folic acid, vitamins B-6 and B-12, lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of this common eye condition. The booklet on macular degeneration answers questions on it in greater detail. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue – No. 701, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Health And Fitness News: Benefits Of Coconut Oil

November 11, 2009 by THP

coconut(THP) The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength. These benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, which contribute to some of its many properties which include acting as an antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, soothing agent, etc.

The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia. As a result of the various health benefits of coconut oil, (though its exact mechanism of action was unknown), it has been extensively used in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicinal system.

Coconut oil is often preferred by athletes and body builders and by those who are dieting. The reason being that coconut oil contains lesser calories than other oils, its fat content is easily converted into energy and it does not lead to accumulation of fat in the heart and arteries. Coconut oil helps in boosting energy and endurance, and enhances the performance of athletes.

Composition: Coconut oil consists of more than ninety percent of saturated fats (Don’t panic! First read to the last word. Your opinion may change), with traces of few unsaturated fatty acids, such as monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Virgin Coconut Oil is no different from this. Let us have a bit detailed study of this.

  • The Saturated Fatty Acids: Most of them are Medium Chain Triglycerides, which are supposed to assimilate well. Lauric Acid is the chief contributor, with more than forty percent of the share, followed by Capric Acid, Caprylic Acid, Myristic Acid and Palmitic.
  • The Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: Linoleic Acid.
  • The Monounsaturated Fatty Acids: Oleic Acid.
  • The Poly-phenols: Gallic Acid, which is phenolic acid. These poly-phenols are supposed to be responsible for the fragrance and the taste of Coconut Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil is rich in these poly-phenols.
  • Certain derivatives of fatty acid like Betaines, Ethanolamide, Ethoxylates, Fatty Esters, Fatty Polysorbates, Monoglycerides and Polyol Esters.
  • Fatty Chlorides, Fatty Alcohol Sulphate and Fatty Alcohol Ether Sulphate, all of which are derivatives of Fatty Alcohols.
  • Vitamins (predominantly Vitamin-E) and minerals.
  • A bit of moisture.Health benefits of coconut oil include the following:
  • Hair Care: Coconut oil is one of the best naturals for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair and provides a shiny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.
  • Stress Relief: Coconut oil is very soothing and hence it helps in removing stress. Applying coconut oil to the head followed with a gentle massage helps in removing mental fatigue.
  • Skin Care: Coconut oil is excellent massage oil for the skin as well. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skins including dry skin. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil. Further, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally becomes prominent with age. Coconut oil helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Therefore coconut oil is a basic ingredient of various body care products such as soaps, lotions, creams, etc., used for skin care.
  • Premature Aging: Coconut oil helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.
  • Heart Diseases: There is a misconception spread among many people that coconut oil is not good for the heart. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats. However, coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as it happens in case of other vegetables oils. It does not lead to increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.
  • Weight Loss: Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.
  • Pancreatitis: Coconut oil is also believed to be useful in treating pancreatitis.
  • Digestion: Internal use of coconut oil occurs primarily as cooking oil. Coconut oil helps in improving the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion related problems including irritable bowel syndrome. The saturated fats present in coconut oil have anti microbial properties and help in dealing with various bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc., that cause indigestion. Coconut oil also helps in absorption of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
  • Immunity: Coconut oil is also good for the immune system. It strengthens the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties.
  • Healing: When applied on infections, it forms a chemical layer which protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. Coconut oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues.
  • Infections: Coconut oil is very effective against a variety of infections due to its antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. According to the Coconut Research Center, coconut oil kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, etc. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, diaper rash, etc.
  • Liver: The presence of medium chain triglycerides and fatty acids helps in preventing liver diseases as they substances are easily converted into energy when they reach the liver, thus reducing work load on the liver and also preventing accumulation of fat.
  • Kidney: Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall bladder diseases. It also helps in dissolving kidney stones.
  • Diabetes: Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also helps in effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and treating diabetes.
  • Bones: As mentioned earlier, coconut oil improves the ability of our body to absorb important minerals. These include calcium and magnesium which are necessary for development of bones. Thus coconut oil is very useful to women who are prone to osteoporosis after middle age.
  • Dental Care: Calcium is an important element present in teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in getting strong teeth. Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.
  • HIV and Cancer: It is believed that coconut oil plays an instrumental role in reducing viral susceptibility of HIV and cancer patients.
  • Coconut Oil is one of the few oils suggested while on the Fat Release system . To learn how you can drop fat quickly click here>>

Health & Fitness News: Benefits Of Calcium

    November 11, 2009 by THP

calcium1(THP) Calcium is undeniably the most available element in the human body where a major chunk is seen as deposits in bones and teeth. It forms 2% of the total body weight of a human adult. Calcium is easily sourced through milk and milk products. Traces of calcium are also present in the circulatory system, which prevents life threatening hemorrhages.

Calcium is a vital element in any healthy human diet, as it plays an important role in the formation of healthy bones and teeth. A regular calcium supply is very important in growing children and teenagers as it can substantially reduce the risks of osteoporosis in old age. It is a painful bone condition that is common in one out of every three women and in one man in every 12 who are over the age of 50.

Deficiency symptoms: The major symptoms of calcium deficiency are skeletal abnormalities such as osteopenia, osteomalacia, osteoporosis and rickets, which are primarily caused by calcium depletion. In children suffering from rickets the bones become weak and flexible and they often have bowed legs, sunken chests and beaded ribs. Some of the other common symptoms include insomnia, premenstrual cramps, tetany, hypertension and arthritis

Important Sources: Calcium is present in abundance in milk and milk products like cheese, and yogurt. Fishes like salmon and sardines, leafy green vegetables including broccoli, spinach, orange juice, cereals, oysters, rice beverages, soy, almonds, black-eyed peas, green peas, and ricotta are also rich sources of calcium.

Benefits: Calcium forms the principle constituent of bones and teeth and is one of the most important minerals required for  healthy living. Calcium has many benefits, some of which are listed below.

    • Prevents obesity: Calcium helps to maintain an optimum body weight and if there is any deficit in calcium in your diet, the body releases parathyroid hormone, which in turn stimulates the bones to release calcium into your blood stream and helps to keep the balance. On the other side, parathyroid hormone also stimulates the production of fat and prevents its break down, which makes you obese. So ensuring the right amount of calcium is the simplest means to ensure the right body weight.
    • It protects the heart: Calcium protects your heart. Sufficient amounts of calcium help muscles, including cardiac muscle to contract and relax properly. Calcium also helps the nervous system to maintain pressure in your arteries. If there is a calcium drop, a hormone called calcitrol is released which contracts the smooth muscles of the arteries, thereby increasing the blood pressure.
    • Prevents premenstrual blues: Adequate amounts of calcium would lessen the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome as a low level of calcium might trigger the release of hormones, which are responsible for premenstrual mood swings including irritability, and depression among others.
    • Prevents the risks of colon cancer: Studies have shown that sufficient intake of calcium would drastically reduce the risks of colon cancer. It is believed that when there is surplus calcium in your body. The unabsorbed calcium passing through the colon gets attached to the cancer prompters and is expelled out of the body.
    • Protects against colon cancer: Adequate calcium intake may reduce your overall risk of colon cancer and suppress the growth of polyps that can lead to cancer. Researchers don’t know exactly why this happens, but it may be linked to the excess calcium that’s left in your intestines after your body absorbs what it needs. On its way through the colon, this unabsorbed calcium is believed to bind with cancer promoters so they’re excreted together from the body. Studies have shown that both food sources of calcium and calcium supplements provide this protective effect. Calcium supplements should be taken in liquid form because liquid vitamins absorb 5 times better then do pill forms.
    • Maintains healthy teeth: Calcium protects your teeth by keeping the jaw bone strong and sturdy all through your life, which in turn ensures tight fitting teeth where bacteria cannot thrive.
    • Helps in the transportation of nutrients: Calcium helps in the easy movement of nutrients across the cell membranes.
    • Protects backbone: It strengthens the backbone and ensures the right shape to the body apart from alleviating the risks of back pain.
    • Prevents osteoporosis: Calcium helps to keep the bones in great shape and prevents many skeletal complaints like arthritis and osteoporosis which could hamper the free movement apart from being extremely painful.
    • Ensures a healthy alkaline pH level: Junk foods, excess sugars and preserved food items would increase the acidity of the body, which in turn could give rise to various disease conditions like cancer, kidney stones and hypertension. Calcium helps to maintain a healthy pH levels, thereby improving your vitality and overall goodness.

Calcium overdosing is not a healthy practice as it might produce many symptoms such as abdominal pain, coma, constipation, depression and head ache among others.

Health And Fitness News: Benefits Of Manganese

    November 11, 2009 by THP

Element(THP) Health benefits of manganese ensure healthy bone structure, bone metabolism, helping in building essential enzymes for building bones. It acts as a co-enzyme to assist metabolic progression in the human body. Apart from these, there are other health benefits of manganese actively involved in forming connective tissues, absorption of calcium, proper functioning of thyroid, sex hormones, regulating blood sugar level, and metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.

Manganese is a mineral form, found in our human body in very minimal amount. Manganese is an actual component of manganese super oxide dismutase enzyme. It is a powerful antioxidant that searches the free radicals in human body and manages to neutralize these damaging particles and prevent any potential danger they may cause. The body may contain at the most 20 mg of manganese concentrated in our kidneys, pancreas, liver and most importantly in our bones. Manganese is very important for normal functioning of the brain and nerve areas of our body.

Deficiency Symptoms: The deficiency symptoms of manganese include high blood pressure, heart ailments, muscular contraction, bone malformation, high cholesterol, poor eyesight, hearing trouble, severe memory loss, shivers and tremors, etc. Even though medical experts argue that manganese deficiency is quite a rarity, more than 35 % of the world population is said to be deficient. Poor dietary habits may be the leading cause.

In some cases, calcium and iron minerals are said to interfere with appropriate exploitation of manganese in human system. Eye problems, sweating, fast heartbeats, weakness, severe cramps may be some of the deficient symptoms. Severe deficiency may cause infertility in women, pancreas damage, heart ailments and osteoporosis.

Important Sources: The most important sources of manganese, rich in this mineral, includes names like raspberries, pineapple, garlic, grapes, beetroot, green beans, rice, peppermint, oats, nuts, watercress, mustard greens, strawberries, blackberries, tropical fruits, lettuce, spinach, molasses, cloves, turmeric, leeks, tofu, whole wheat, banana, cucumber, kiwifruit, figs and carrots. Sources of naturally abundant manganese trace minerals include green veggies, brown rice, coconuts, almonds, hazelnuts, etc. They are all excellent absorption helpers.

Benefits: The health benefits of manganese are tilted towards overall wellness of human beings. Here is the list of most significant benefits:

    • Healthy bones: Manganese is essential for proper and normal growth of human bone structure. It is an effective mineral, and aids in increasing the mineral density of spinal bone, especially in post-menopausal women. Most women after post-menopause suffer from manganese deficiency.
    • Free radicals: Due to antioxidant properties of manganese, health benefits of manganese include a special function of controlling the flow of free radicals in the human body. These radicals are capable of damaging human cells. Manganese controls these radicals to prevent any type of damage.
    • Sugar level: Manganese has also exhibited its efficiency in controlling the level of sugar in human blood. This may further prevent the occurrence of certain diseases like diabetes.
    • Epilepsy: Low levels of manganese can trigger epileptic seizures. Manganese supplements can aid in controlling the possibility of any minor or major epilepsy seizure.
    • Metabolism: Metabolism happens to be one of the vital functions of manganese. Manganese-activated enzymes help in the metabolism of cholesterol, amino acids and carbohydrates. It is also important for the metabolism of Vitamins such as Vitamin E and Vitamin B-1.
    • Inflammation and sprains: Manganese is widely known as a remedy for sprains and inflammation since it helps to  increase the level of superoxide dismutase, resulting in activity as an antioxidant.
    • Preventing osteoporosis: Manganese supplements are known to relieve osteoporosis and osteoarthritis syndrome.
    • Alleviating PMS syndrome: For women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome, manganese helps to alleviate the mood swings, headaches, depression and irritability to a considerable extent.
    • Aids in vitamin absorption: Manganese helps absorb vital vitamins like vitamin B and E and minerals like magnesium.
    • Brain and nervous system: Manganese is essential for healthy functioning of the brain and it is also used to treat specific nervous disorders.
    • Glucose Metabolism: Manganese also aids in glucose metabolism in the human body. This is one of the most important health benefits of manganese to provide proper resources to different body parts.
    • Digestive tract: Manganese is a mineral, which is helpful in maintaining the functioning of a digestive tract. This further improves the absorption of fat in the process of digestion.

Pharmacist Touts Effectiveness Of Minerals For Sluggish Thyroid

    November 6, 2009 by THP

Minerals play an important role in regulating thyroid function

Minerals play an important role in regulating thyroid function

    Dear Pharmacist,

I am constantly fatigued, my hair is thinning, and I am gaining weight. My doctor says that I have hypothyroidism and prescribed Synthroid. Can you give me more information about thyroid medications and natural ways to help myself?

    –G.A. Albany, New York

Answer: Approximately 12 million Americans have hypothyroidism. You are lucky if your major symptoms are fatigue, hair loss and weight gain, because there are about 40 possible other symptoms related to low thyroid, including allergies, goiter, depression, swollen eyelids, brittle nails, infertility, irritability, constipation, menstrual irregularities, psoriasis, eczema, constant infections, yeast overgrowth, fibromyalgia, heart palpitations, high cholesterol, memory impairment, cold intolerance, and diabetes. That last one is a shocker to most people but it’s true –low thyroid often precipitates diabetes and all of it’s potentially devastating complications.

Doctors often prescribe Synthroid (sold generically as levothyroxine). It provides your body with a precursor to thyroid hormone called T4. Your body converts T4 into T3 which is really what you want because T3 does all the work for you. T3 is active thyroid hormone. All thyroid medications should be taken on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning unless otherwise directed. It is usually taken orally or sometimes sublingually.

Your doctor could also prescribe “Armour Thyroid” for you, which may work better because it provides both T4 and T3 in one pill. Even better, progressive doctors can call the local compounding pharmacy to have them prepare a special formula of natural thyroid hormone for you. Dosage is individual, and based on your blood work, symptoms, and basal body temperature (your body’s lowest temperature during sleep). Next, try these few suggestions:

Switch your regular table salt which only contains “sodium chloride” to sea salt which contains a full range of minerals. Your thyroid gland loves minerals and makes thyroid hormone more efficiently in the presence of natural minerals.

Go gluten-free. Researchers have found a significant link between wheat allergies (Celiac disease) and people with thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease). Antibodies may come down within months of going gluten-free.

Limit intake of certain supplements. For example, alpha lipoic acid could interfere with the amount of active T3 your body makes. Keep dosages low (or avoid) in thyroid disease.

Limit intake of certain foods. For instance, processed soy foods (tofu, tempeh, soy milk) and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, cauliflower) work against your thyroid.

In addition, depending on what your doctor says, supplement with the following:

Multi-minerals- People with reduced levels of zinc, iodine, selenium, copper and magnesium have difficulty making active T3 thyroid hormone.

Spirulina supplements- a natural dietary supplement that is rich in trace minerals (and precious iodine) helps drive the production of thyroid hormone.

Ashwagandha- an Ayurvedic herb that appears to nourish the thyroid gland, make thyroid hormone and provide antioxidant protection.

The All Natural Way To Regulate Thyroid Is Through Minerals

Health And Fitness News: Benefits Of Copper

    November 6, 2009 by THP

    Health Benefits Of Copper

    Health Benefits Of Copper

(THP) The health benefits of copper include proper growth, utilization of iron, enzymatic reactions, connective tissues, hair, eyes, aging and energy production. Apart from these, heart rhythm, thyroid glands, arthritis, wound healing. RBC formation and cholesterol are other health benefits of copper.

The health benefits of copper are crucial for healthy existence, as this mineral enables normal metabolic process in association with amino acids and vitamins. Copper cannot be produced within the body and hence needs to be sourced from external food sources. Copper is the third most prevalent mineral in the body and it is mostly carried by the blood plasma protein, Ceruloplasmin. In order to enjoy health benefits of copper, it must be included in diet of an individual.

Deficiency symptoms: Deficiency of copper can have the following symptoms in human beings:

    • Anemia
    • Low body temperature
    • Brittle bones
    • Osteoporosis
    • Dilated veins
    • Low white blood cell count
    • Uneven heartbeat
    • Elevated cholesterol levels
    • Low resistance to infections
    • Birth defects
    • Low skin pigmentation
    • Thyroid disorders

Some of the other symptoms include lethargy, paleness, sores, edema, stunted growth, hair loss, anorexia, diarrhea, bleeding under the skin and dermatitis. In infant boys, inherited copper deficiency of Menkes’ syndrome can happen rarely, where natural absorption of copper becomes impossible. Early medical intervention is vital in such cases.

Important Sources: Copper is present in various food sources such as liver, meat, seafood, beans, whole grains soy flour, wheat bran, almonds, avocados, barley, garlic, nuts, oats, black-strap molasses ,beets and lentils. Copper also reaches human body by drinking water from copper pipes and by using copper cooking wear. Oysters are the richest sources of copper. Copper content is lost because of prolonged storing in tin cans and in food materials that are high in acid content.

Benefits: Copper has many important roles to play in maintaining a healthy body and some of its benefits include:

    • Arthritis: The health benefits of copper relate to its anti-inflammatory actions to assist in reducing the symptoms of arthritis. Market is also flooded with copper bracelets as well as other accessories for the cure of this disease. Copper also works as a home remedy for arthritis i.e. water stored in a copper container overnight accumulates copper traces which are beneficial to strengthen the muscular system.
    • Proper growth: Copper is highly essential for normal growth and health. Thus, it is definitely important to include this mineral in balanced form in regular diets of an individual. It is helpful in protection of skeletal, nervous and cardiovascular systems.
    • Pigmentation to hair and eyes: Copper is a vital element of the natural dark pigment, melanin, which imparts coloration to skin, hair, and eyes. Melanin can be produced by melanocytes only in the presence of the cuproenzyme called tyrosinase. Intake of copper supplements helps in protecting the graying hair.
    • Connective tissues: Copper is an important nutrient that has a significant role in the synthesis of hemoglobin, myelin, body pigment melanin and collagen. It helps to protect the myelin sheath surrounding the nerves. It is also actively involved in the production of an element of connective tissue, elastin.
    • Brain Stimulation: Copper is widely known as a brain stimulant. It is also otherwise called “Brain food”. However, copper content in the diet has to be in right proportions. Too much of copper is also not healthy for the brain. Copper has a control function to play for the brain and hence the extent of copper supplement intake has to be balanced.
    • Utilization of iron and sugar: Copper helps in the absorption of iron from the intestinal tract and release from its primary storage sites like liver. It also helps in the utilization of sugar in the body.
    • Enzymatic reactions: Copper is either an element or a co-factor of as many as 50 different enzymes that take part in various biological reactions within the body. These enzymes can function properly only in the presence of copper.
    • Helps in stalling aging: Copper is a strong antioxidant, which works in the presence of the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase, to safeguard the cell membranes from free radicals.
    • Increases energy production: Copper is essential for the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate, which is an energy storehouse of the human body. The cuproenzyme, cytochrome c oxidase, affects the intracellular energy production. It acts as a catalyst in the reduction of molecular oxygen to water, during which the enzyme produces an electrical gradient used by the mitochondria to synthesize the vital energy-storing molecule, ATP.
    • Bactericidal properties: Studies have shown that copper can destroy or inhibit the growth of bacterial strains such as E Coli.
    • Thyroid glands: Copper has an important role in ensuring the proper functioning of thyroid glands.
    • RBC formation: Copper helps in the production of red blood cells hemoglobin and bone.
    • Immunity: Copper has an important role in the healing process and thus, ensures better wound healing. Copper acts as an extremely good immunity builder. It also works as a cure to anemic problems.
    • Reduces cholesterol: Research studies have shown that copper can reduce bad cholesterol level and helps in increasing beneficial cholesterol.
